Tips to keep your home heating system clean

Sludge build up in your home heating system is bad news – it can lead to faults, breakdowns, costly repairs and of course reduced efficiency for your heating. But what can you do to improve this situation? At Emo we would recommend that you take some time to give your heating system a bit of a spring clean – after all, you’ll look after your car with regular maintenance, so why not your boiler and heating system? Here are some excellent tips to keep your home heating system clean and working as it should.

    Flush your radiators

If you’ve noticed a lot of clanking noises coming from your radiators when you turn your heating on, or notice that they seem to take longer to heat up and they have dirty coloured water in them when you bleed them, then it’s likely you have some sludge build up in your home heating system. This can be from dirt and rust build up, and over time if left untreated it can lead to poor circulation in your heating system, or a breakdown altogether.

Call a heating engineer out to professionally flush your heating system and all the pipes to completely remove this sludge build up. Depending on how large your house is and how bad the build up is, this process can take up to a full day to complete. Afterwards, you should adjust the pressure in your heating system and the thermostats on your radiators – you might have had them set higher than they needed to be if your system was inefficient before.

    Boiler service

We always recommend that you get your boiler serviced once a year to make sure it is safe for use and any potentially deadly carbon monoxide leaks are detected, but it’s also to make sure that your heating system stays in good working condition.  Your heating engineer will check your boiler for moving parts and clean anything that has dust, dirt or grime build up which could impact on how efficiently it runs. It’s also important to clean out any filters and check for signs of wear and tear which could lead to a breakdown – definitely not ideal now that the colder weather has begun in earnest and you’re relying on your boiler every day.

Heating oil additives to your oil tank

How can you clean the inside of your heating oil tank? It’s not a question asked often but when it comes to keeping our home heating system clean it’s not unusual to think about how you can keep the pipes leading from your oil tank to your boiler clean and grime free. The answer is – heating oil additives. One bottle of additives is enough for a full tank of oil, and if you add it to your tank just before you get a delivery, it will help prevent a build up of rust and sludge in the tank and the connecting fuel lines. This helps to ensure cleaner fuel gets used in your system, and keeps everything working as efficiently as possible.
